Before you get a quote
Four things to know first
- A QBCC licence is needed over A$3,300 In Queensland, the QBCC says individuals and companies must hold a QBCC licence to carry out building work valued over A$3,300. QBCC's licence pages name no class for concrete repair, so ask whoever quotes which licence the work is done under.
- In a body corporate, ask who is responsible Queensland's body corporate rules say the body corporate must maintain common property in good condition, and in a structurally sound condition where it is structural. Which parts of a balcony are common property depends on the survey plan.
- Engineering design has its own rule Queensland's Professional Engineers Act says a person who is not a practising professional engineer must not carry out professional engineering services, unless under the direct supervision of one.
- Cracks need looking at UNSW says rust forces open bigger cracks, which let more water in. A rust stain or a hairline crack is worth an inspection before a piece breaks away.

Concrete Cancer Repair across the Sunshine Coast
Concrete cancer begins at the steel, below the surface. UNSW's School of Materials Science and Engineering explains that water can seep through cracks or pores to reach the steel reinforcing, where it reacts to form rust. The corrosion product takes up more space than the metal it formed from, and the part of the concrete that carries the load is the part being eaten away, which is why the damage is serious. A rust stain or a hairline crack deserves a look before a piece comes away.
